#Hashtag your way to Social Dominance

You see it all over social media sites. From Twitter, to Facebook, to Instagram, users are using these ‘tags’ as a form of communication, it’s a way of life. But what is it? How do we use it? Most importantly, how does it benefit my business? If you’ve never used them before, allow me to introduce you to…

The Hashtag!

If you’re not using it, you better start.

So what is it and why does it matter?

When it comes down to it, the hashtag is essentially used in social media circles as a way of identifying posts that users create online. For instance, if someone were to post an article on twitter with the hashtag #socialmedia, I would be able to find that specific post (and many others!) by running a search. The same goes for Facebook, Instagram, Google Plus, Tumblr, YouTube, and many more. You could say that in essence, the hashtag is there to make it easier for users to find relevant information on various social media sites.

Well, how do I use it?

The biggest mistake social media users make when using a hashtag is to create long hashtagged sentences that other users will not actually search for. For example, if I wanted to create a new post on Facebook that goes something along the lines of “wow, I can’t believe Facebook is now using hashtags,” the biggest mistake you could make is to write it as “#icantbelievefacebookisnowusinghashtags.” The correct way to use a hashtag is to choose the strongest keywords in your post that are relevant to the message you are trying to convey, and just hashtag those specific words. It would look something like this – “Wow, I can’t believe #Facebook is now using #hashtags!”

Is the hashtag really that important for business?

Absolutely. It doesn’t matter what kind of company you are, what field you specialize in or even what language you post in; the hashtag is one of the most important tools your business can use on it’s social media pages. The hashtag allows users outside your social media ‘followers’ or ‘likers’ to locate your posts at any time. The best part is, as long as you are using the hashtag correctly and users are constantly looking it up, your important content will always be found by people who are actually searching for it. Just try it for yourself – make sure to hashtag your next post and watch it reach more users outside your social media circle than ever before.
